TraceLead

Track leads from ChatGPT and other AI assistants, by name

When someone clicks a link in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Claude and later enquires, TraceLead fills your hidden source field with the assistant's hostname, such as chatgpt.com. The lead reaches your inbox or CRM saying which assistant sent it.

No card needed. No lead caps on any plan.

Why ChatGPT traffic leads go missing

An assistant's link is an ordinary link. The only trace it leaves is the referrer, the site the browser says the visitor came from, and sometimes a tag on the address: ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com.

Both disappear as soon as the visitor moves to a second page, and most enquire from your contact page, not the page the assistant cited. TraceLead keeps them from the first visit and classifies them by the published rules. Where neither arrives, it says direct rather than guess.

First visit tl_source tl_channel
A link clicked in ChatGPTreferrer chatgpt.com, utm_source=chatgpt.com chatgpt.com referral
A link clicked in Perplexityreferrer perplexity.ai perplexity.ai referral
The tag arrives, the referrer does notutm_source=chatgpt.com only chatgpt.com other
Neither arrivesno referrer, no tag (direct) direct

A later direct visit never overwrites a recorded referral, so a visitor who found you through Perplexity and came back by bookmark is still a Perplexity lead.

How to track leads from ChatGPT and Perplexity

Nothing specific to any assistant needs setting up: the same tag and fields that record your ads and newsletters record them too.

How every visit is classified
  1. Add the TraceLead tag to every page

    An assistant can link to any page of your site, so the tag needs to be on every page, not only the one with the form.

    <script async src="https://app.tracelead.io/snippet/v1/tracelead.js"
            data-site="tl_YOUR_SITE_ID"></script>
  2. Add the source fields to the form

    <input type="hidden" name="tl_source">
    <input type="hidden" name="tl_channel">
    <input type="hidden" name="tl_referrer_host">
    <input type="hidden" name="tl_landing_page">

    tl_landing_page tells you which page the assistant sent them to, with sensitive parameters removed.

  3. Report on the source in your CRM

    Map the fields to CRM fields, then build a view or report where the source contains chatgpt, perplexity, gemini or claude. The hostname is kept as the browser sent it, so match on the name rather than an exact address.

  4. Connect your cookie banner, then test

    Nothing is stored or filled until the visitor agrees. Pick your consent manager in the site's attribution settings or call TraceLead from your banner. To test, open a link to your site from a ChatGPT answer, accept cookies, move to your contact page and send a test entry: the source should read chatgpt.com.

Which AI assistants arrive as a lead source

These need no setup: each arrives as a referral under its own hostname, and only Gemini needs a rule of its own, so that gemini.google.com is not counted as Google search. There is no separate AI channel: they are referrals, and the source tells you which assistant.

Any other assistant that passes a referrer arrives the same way, as its own hostname with channel referral.

  • ChatGPTreferrer chatgpt.com (and its utm_source tag): referral
  • Perplexityreferrer perplexity.ai: referral
  • Geminireferrer gemini.google.com: referral, not Google search
  • Claudereferrer claude.ai: referral

The TraceLead dashboard shows sessions and leads by source from the same records, so you can compare what each assistant sends with your other channels.

Attribution without personal data. No names, emails, form values, IP addresses or user agents. Ever.

No privacy workarounds. Nothing before consent, no fingerprinting, no ad-blocker bypass, no cross-site identity.

How do I track leads from ChatGPT?

Add hidden fields named tl_source and tl_channel to your form and install the TraceLead tag. A visitor who clicks a link in ChatGPT arrives with chatgpt.com as the referrer (and utm_source=chatgpt.com on the link), so tl_source holds chatgpt.com and tl_channel holds referral, on whichever page they enquire from.

Can I see ChatGPT traffic leads in my CRM?

Yes, once the hidden fields are mapped to CRM fields. Each lead from ChatGPT carries chatgpt.com as its source, so a filter or report on the source field lists them. The TraceLead dashboard shows the same sessions and leads by source.

How does Perplexity referral tracking work?

When a visitor follows a link in Perplexity and the browser passes perplexity.ai as the referrer, TraceLead keeps that hostname as the source with medium and channel referral, and fills tl_referrer_host with it too.

Is there an AI search channel for the lead source?

No. TraceLead has no separate AI channel: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude visits are channel referral, and the source field names the assistant. Group them in your CRM by source, for example a view where source contains chatgpt, perplexity, gemini or claude.

Why do some ChatGPT visits show as direct?

When the browser sends no referrer and the link has no tag, the visit cannot be told apart from someone typing your address, so it is direct. When only the utm_source=chatgpt.com tag survives, the source is still chatgpt.com, with medium unknown and channel other.

Is Gemini counted as Google search?

No. Visits from gemini.google.com are referrals with that hostname as the source, not organic search. A click from a Google results page is organic search, whether it was an ordinary result or an AI Overview link; an ad click carries a gclid and is paid search.

Does TraceLead see what the visitor asked the assistant?

No. It keeps only the referring hostname, never the full referring address, and never reads what anyone types into your form.
