TraceLead

Track Facebook, LinkedIn and TikTok ads leads to the campaign

TraceLead fills your hidden form fields with the campaign and the click id from LinkedIn, TikTok, X or Meta, from the visitor's first visit. LinkedIn, TikTok and X ad clicks arrive as paid_social. A Facebook click with no UTM tags arrives as organic social, so tag your Meta ads.

No card needed. No lead caps on any plan.

Why Facebook ads leads show up as organic social

Facebook adds an fbclid to every link people click out of Facebook and Instagram: your ad, a friend's post, a group comment. An fbclid tells you the visit came from Meta, not that you paid for it.

So TraceLead treats an fbclid on its own as organic social, and lets your UTM tags say when it was an ad. LinkedIn, TikTok and X are different: they add their click ids only to ad clicks, so those ids alone mean paid social.

The Meta click carries tl_source tl_channel
fbclid=… only facebook organic_social
utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=paid_social facebook paid_social
utm_source=instagram&utm_medium=paid_social instagram paid_social
utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=cpc facebook paid_social
no tags, referrer l.facebook.com facebook organic_social

A paid-search medium such as cpc on a social source counts as paid social, not paid search. The first touch is kept for the site's lifetime, 90 days by default, so the campaign is still there when the visitor enquires from another page.

How to track Facebook ads leads in your CRM

Four steps. The tagging step is the one most setups miss.

The full classification rules
  1. Tag your Meta ads with UTM parameters

    Add these to the link of every Facebook and Instagram ad, with the campaign name you want to see in your CRM:

    utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=paid_social&utm_campaign=autumn-leads

    LinkedIn, TikTok and X ads can be tagged the same way; without tags they still arrive as paid social when their click id is on the link.

  2. Add the TraceLead tag to every page

    <script async src="https://app.tracelead.io/snippet/v1/tracelead.js"
            data-site="tl_YOUR_SITE_ID"></script>
  3. Add the hidden fields to your form

    <input type="hidden" name="tl_channel">
    <input type="hidden" name="tl_source">
    <input type="hidden" name="tl_utm_campaign">
    <input type="hidden" name="tl_utm_content">
    <input type="hidden" name="tl_fbclid">
    <input type="hidden" name="tl_li_fat_id">
    <input type="hidden" name="tl_ttclid">

    Sites created before snippet 1.2.0 also need a mapping for ttclid, li_fat_id and twclid: Site → Attribution settings → Add mapping.

  4. Connect your cookie banner, then test

    Nothing is stored or filled until the visitor agrees. Pick your consent manager in the site's attribution settings or call TraceLead from your banner. Then open your site with ?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=paid_social, accept cookies, send a test entry and check that the channel reads paid_social.

Which ad click ids are captured

Each click id has a hidden field of its own, and each decides the source when the link has no UTM tags. When several arrive together, the order below wins.

The values travel only into your form. TraceLead's dashboard records which kind of click id was present, never the id itself.

Hidden field Added by Arrives as, without UTM tags
tl_gclid Google Ads google / cpc / paid_search
tl_gbraid Google Ads (iOS) google / cpc / paid_search
tl_wbraid Google Ads (iOS) google / cpc / paid_search
tl_msclkid Microsoft Ads bing / cpc / paid_search
tl_ttclid TikTok Ads tiktok / paid_social / paid_social
tl_li_fat_id LinkedIn Ads linkedin / paid_social / paid_social
tl_twclid X Ads twitter / paid_social / paid_social
tl_fbclid Facebook and Instagram, any click facebook / social / organic_social

How do I track Facebook ads leads in my CRM?

Tag every Meta ad's link with utm_source=facebook (or instagram), utm_medium=paid_social and a utm_campaign, add hidden fields named tl_channel, tl_source and tl_utm_campaign to your form, and map them to CRM fields. The lead then arrives as paid_social with its campaign, even if the visitor enquires days later from another page.

Does TraceLead capture the fbclid?

Yes. Add a hidden field named tl_fbclid and it holds the fbclid from the first visit. On its own it counts as organic social, because Facebook adds an fbclid to every outbound click, paid or not; your UTM tags decide whether the visit was an ad.

Why does my Facebook ad lead show as organic_social?

The ad link carried an fbclid but no UTM tags. TraceLead never guesses that an fbclid means paid. Add utm_medium=paid_social to the ad and later clicks arrive as paid_social; leads already recorded keep their first touch.

How does LinkedIn ads lead source tracking work?

A LinkedIn ad click that carries li_fat_id arrives as linkedin / paid_social / paid_social, because LinkedIn adds that id only to ad clicks. Tagged links work too: utm_source=linkedin with utm_medium=cpc or paid_social is paid social. A LinkedIn post with no id and no tags is organic social.

Can I track TikTok ads leads?

Yes. A TikTok ad click that carries ttclid arrives as tiktok / paid_social / paid_social, and tl_ttclid holds the id. X ad clicks with twclid work the same way, with twitter as the source.

Which wins, the UTM tags or the click id?

The UTM tags. When a link has only utm_source or only utm_medium, the click id fills in the missing one; with neither, the click id decides both. When several click ids arrive together, Google wins, then Microsoft, then TikTok, LinkedIn and X, then fbclid.

Is anything stored before the visitor accepts cookies?

No. Nothing is stored or filled until your consent banner says yes, and the form submits as normal either way. TraceLead's dashboard records only which kind of click id was present, never its value.
